Stem cell therapy can provide a valuable treatment options for dogs suffering from joint problems. Whilst some underlying causes can be treated surgically, there are times when surgery is not suitable for the condition or the patient.

Canine stem cell applications

Stem cell services are selectively used at the RVC for the following conditions:

  • Osteoarthritis (including secondary to hip or elbow dysplasia)
  • Tendon injuries such as supraspinatus tendinopathy (shoulder tendon problems)

Why use canine stem cell therapy?

There is a growing body of evidence suggesting that improvements in pain and mobility lasts for long durations after mesenchymal stem cell treatments have been used. This had led to this becoming a more popular treatment option for osteoarthritis in dogs.

The canine stem cell therapy process

Stem cell therapy has traditionally used autologous stem cells which are harvested from the patient through a surgical procedure carried out under general anaesthetic. We are now using a recently licensed ready-to-use formulation of stem cells for dogs with osteoarthritis. This means that we no longer need to perform a surgery to obtain the fat used to isolate stem cells. This reduces cost and risk to the patient.

After consultation with the Specialist-led Orthopaedic Service at the Queen Mother Hospital for Animals, RVC, we will advise you on the options for treating your pet. If we consider that your pet may benefit from Stem Cell therapy then the cells are ordered in and are typically to be injected into the dog within 7-10 days. This injection is performed under sedation.

Why choose the RVC for canine stem cell services?

We have extensive experience of helping canine patients with stem cell treatment for joint, tendon and ligament injuries.
